Between the mountains: Where is Medjugorje?

Until the Lady of Medjugorje appeared, Medjugorje was a completely unknown little place. Today, many pilgrims from around the world want to know where this holy place is located and have a great desire to visit this place so that the Lady of Medjugorje may appear to them.

Medjugorje is located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, more precisely in a settlement in the municipality of Čitiluk in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Medjugorje, as a symbol of peace, is located at an altitude of 200m.

The name Medjugorje means “between the mountains”. The beauty of Our Lady appeared right between the mountains. In 1981, the rocky and steep road could not prevent six children from reaching the lady and receiving her messages of peace. Today, many pilgrims visit the same rocky place between the mountains.

Of the many natural beauties of Bosnia and Herzegovina such as the Kravica waterfall or the Bosnian pyramid, Our Lady decided to come to Međugorje, a small place between the mountains!

Our Lady of Medjugorje was seen by 30 million pilgrims

In the summer of 1981, on June 24 to be exact, six children saw Our Lady who appeared to them with a child in her arms. From that day until today, more than a million people visit this place of apparition every year! Pilgrims from all over the world boldly set out on this journey for Our Lady to appear and convey her messages to them.

Even though communism ruled over the majority of the population in these regions right at the time of the apparition of the Lady of Medjugorje, that did not prevent this miraculous event from becoming known throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and later throughout the world.

A large number of people who visit Medjugorje do not miss the opportunity to visit beautiful Split and Dubrovnik, cities in another popular Balkan country, Croatia. What connects Split and Dubrovnik are the beautiful beaches of the Adriatic Sea that surround these two cities.

In less than two hours drive from Medjugorje, you will reach Split, an important cultural, historical, and tourist center with numerous important monuments, museums, and galleries. Here you can visit Diocletian’s Palace, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Also, in less than two hours drive from Medjugorje, you can reach Dubrovnik, which stands out for its well-preserved medieval walls and impressive architecture. This entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a very popular tourist destination for many tourists from all over the world!

In these cities, you will feel the real Mediterranean atmosphere, which will complete your pilgrimage to Medjugorje.
