Description
Just outside Gjirokastër, the village of Lazarat offers one of the most authentic culinary experiences in southern Albania. This is not a cooking class in the traditional sense—it is a private cultural immersion, hosted by a local family whose recipes have been passed down through generations.
Set in a charming garden kitchen, the experience begins with a warm welcome and an introduction to the ingredients that define Albanian rural cuisine: fresh herbs, local cheese, olive oil, and seasonal produce. Guests are invited to take part in the preparation, working side by side with the hosts in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
The focus is on traditional dishes deeply rooted in the region. You will prepare petanik, a layered dish cooked over natural fire, known for its simplicity and depth of flavor. Alongside it, stuffed petulla—a beloved rural specialty—offers a contrast of textures, while hasude, a traditional dessert, completes the experience.
Beyond cooking, the experience unfolds through storytelling. The hosts share the history of their family recipes, offering insight into the rhythms of village life and the transformation of Lazarat itself—from a complex past to a community now embracing cultural tourism and local hospitality.
The session often includes traditional elements such as churning dhalla (buttermilk) and concludes with a shared meal, creating a moment that feels less like an activity and more like being welcomed into someone’s home.
