Start in Baščaršija, Sarajevo’s Ottoman-era bazaar district, where craft streets, copper workshops, and traditional Bosnian coffee culture define the old town atmosphere. Nearby, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque complex is one of the city’s key Ottoman heritage sites and a centrepiece of historic Sarajevo.

Follow the Miljacka River to the Latin Bridge, associated with the 1914 assassination that sparked World War I, then continue to Vijećnica (Sarajevo City Hall), one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. For recent history, the Tunnel of Hope (Sarajevo War Tunnel) is a must: built in 1993 under the airport runway, it served as a lifeline for the besieged city and today operates as a museum site.

For views, head to the Yellow Fortress (Žuta tabija), especially near sunset. For a city-to-mountain escape, take the Trebević cable car, which reopened in 2018 after being destroyed during the war, linking Sarajevo with Mount Trebević and its Olympic-era legacy.

A guided walking tour is the fastest way to understand Sarajevo’s layers—Ottoman foundations, Austro-Hungarian civic architecture, and the lived memory of the 1990s. Sarajevo is also one of the Balkans’ great food cities: plan time for ćevapi, burek/pita bakeries, baklava, and traditional ašćinica kitchens around Baščaršija.

For outdoor time, Mount Trebević offers easy viewpoints and a quick nature break from the city. In winter, Sarajevo becomes a base for mountain days, with nearby Olympic-era ski areas depending on conditions.
